Mahou Cinco Estrellas goes super premium with help from Spear

The Spanish Mahou – San Miguel Group is taking its flagship brand Mahou Cinco Estrellas to a new level by going ‘Super Premium’. First launched in 1969, the shiny golden Mahou Cinco Estrellas lager has a distinctive flavour, made with the best varieties of hops and brewer’s yeast. This well established brand now has an elite variant, exclusively available for on-trade sale.

Having worked together on numerous projects, Spear was more than happy to assist Mahou – San Miguel with the latest extension to their portfolio. The labels are printed with the characteristic Mahou red & gold ink as well as gold hot foil to establish the traditional look and brand recognition. However, the label takes a modern twist not only by using clear pressure sensitive material, but also incorporating a frosted Mahou ‘M’ and five stars which stand boldly in contrast to the brown glass bottle.

Wah Lo, Spear’s Technical Services Manager explains how Spear accomplished the look: “This premium extension of the popular Mahou Cinco Estrellas required a sophisticated appearance whilst preserving the familiar Mahou branding. We used a bright gold foil to achieve a glossy, premium look but complimented this with a gold ink to maintain the elegancy of the brand. We then accentuated the brand’s emblem by adding a frosting using a specially blended, matte white flexo ink.”
