drupa 2020 Essentials of Print No. 3: Packaging in an E-Commerce World

“Digital pre-print opens a new era for brand protection and brand activation in e-commerce. Smart, digitally printed corrugated cardboard packaging solutions inform, entertain and network the shopper. They warn of product counterfeiting and guarantee transparency in shipment and traceability. All this is now possible not only for short, but also for medium and long print runs. Hence, there is almost a paradox: that of individualized mass production.”

The ongoing digitalization and the associated changes in consumer shopping behavior have a major impact on the design and construction of packaging. Mass-produced products lose their attractiveness. Brand manufacturers, retailers and logistics providers are adapting to the new challenges of online trading. They receive strong impetus from the packaging industry, which has a lot to offer when it comes to e-commerce packaging made of corrugated board with innovative solutions and state-of-the-art print technologies. 74.4 billion: this is the number of shipments that courier, express and parcel (CEP) services carried worldwide in 2017, according to the latest figures in the annual Pitney Bows Parcel Shipping Index. Roughly 17 percent more than in the previous year. This surge in parcel volume is being fueled by the continuing boom in e-commerce. Already by 2020, it is expected to exceed 100 billion parcels in the thirteen industrial nations surveyed. In view of such volumes and growth rates, it becomes clear: Packaging has long since emerged as a key component in the e-commerce logistics chain.

Avery Dennison introduces new label adhesive technology for stronger hold on rough surfaces

Avery Dennison introduced their new Surfas Technology at Labelexpo Europe. This patent-pending adhesive technology increases surface contact for better initial tack to create a stronger hold on rough finishes, like corrugated boxes. Surfas Technology, a perfect solution for e-commerce and logistics labeling needs, offers a sustainable edge and will be available at the same price as conventional labeling solutions for corrugated board.

The newest in a long history of Avery Dennison adhesive technology innovations, Surfas reduces the risk of curled or failed logistics labels to ensure on-time and accurate shipping. Corrugated cardboard can be a challenge for label adhesion, according to Eric Ide, senior product manager, Label and Packaging Materials Europe. Irregular surfaces require a more rigorous label adhesive that can bond to a wider variety of finishes. Surfas Technology is developed for ultimate strength and bond when labeling rough substrates. In addition to streamlining operations, increasing reliability and improving accuracy, the new adhesive coating technology offers sustainability advantages by using significantly less oil per square meter of material.

Celebrating 42 years of waterless offset printing

As Labelexpo celebrates its 40th anniversary, we at Toray are also taking the opportunity to celebrate 42 years of waterless offset printing, sharing the story of how and why waterless offset printing came to be as well as where we see it going in the future.

After about five years of R&D, waterless offset printing was first introduced to the market at drupa 1977 and commercialized by Toray in 1978. The first waterless offset plates were TAP-type positive plates. Because the first plate was based on a positive working format, where about 95% of production is positive-working, the product was first marketed in Japan. Press, ink, and paper manufacturers collaborated with Toray to support the product, and the initial market acceptance there was very good.

Memjet partner shows the future of on-demand direct-to-shape printing

Memjet announces that OPM Europa BV in Tilburg, Netherlands, has combined robotics and Memjet’s VersaPass technology to create a direct-to-shape printer called LabelSaver. OPM’s LabelSaver integrates its own robotic system with the Memjet-powered Trojan Label print engine and proprietary coatings to create a self-moving printer that shows the possibilities of label-less production.

In recent years, the proliferation of SKUs and increased demand for short-run labels have driven small manufacturers to look for more economical ways to label their products. Dursun Acun, founder and European sales director at OPM Europa BV, set out to provide a solution to this challenge by integrating robotics into label production to create label-less production that would improve the speed, cost and environmental impact of label printing.

Once Acun developed the robotic technology, he needed a printing technology that could bring the device to life and support his goals of efficiency, economy and improved environmental impact. After considering several technologies, Acun chose to work with Trojan Label and include Memjet’s VersaPass printing technology in his solution. Memjet’s combination of innovation, speed, simplicity and affordability made it the right choice for the LabelSaver solution.
